An explosion shook a Kalihi Valley neighborhood late last night as fire damaged a two-story house and displaced seven residents.

No one was hurt, a firefighter said.

Nine fire companies responded to the 10:48 p.m. alarm at 2594 Kalihi St. The fire was brought under control at 11:03 p.m., fire Capt. Emmit Kane said.

Kerriana Wray, 15, who lives about five houses away, said she heard a loud boom and felt her house shake.

Wray said she at first thought a car had crashed because there are many accidents on Kalihi Street.

But then she went outside and saw flames coming from a house down the street, she said.

Another neighbor, who identified herself only as Carol, said she also felt her house shake and thought it might have been an earthquake.

"I was ready to go to sleep, and then the house shook. It was scary," she said.

Kane said the cause of the fire was not immediately determined and that the source of the explosion was unknown.

However, he said "to hear popping and explosions is not uncommon" during a fire.

Police closed Kalihi Street from Nalanieha to Monte streets.

Officials from the American Red Cross went to the house to arrange shelter for the home's residents — five adults and two children.
