O'ahu team advances to Cal Ripken World Series

O'ahu belted six home runs to beat Buchanan, Calif., 10-4, in the final of the Cal Ripken (ages 12-under) Southwest Regional Tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Ryan Yamane, Ryan Cortez, Kewby Meyer, Kalani Lagoc-Crawford, Tim Arakawa and Cory Quiamzon homered for O'ahu, which advanced to the World Series, Aug. 12 to 21 at Aberdeen, Md.

Lagoc-Crawford went five-plus innings with nine strikeouts, and Mililani broke the game open with six runs in the top of the sixth.

Meyer was named the tournament's MVP; and Arakawa, Kash Kalohelani and Lagoc-Crawford were named to the all-tournament team.


WRESTLING


LOCAL ATHLETES GAIN ALL-AMERICA STATUS

Wrestlers Desiree Memea, Krystal Kiyuna, Carla Watase, Joleen Oshiro and Kara Takasaki were named All-Americans at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Women's National Championships at FargoDome in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday.

Memea captured the 175-pound weight class with an 8-7 win over Toni Copeland of New York; Kiyuna placed third in the 138 division, winning by fall over Paige Storm of Iowa; Takasaki finished fifth by a 10-0 technical fall over Trisha Kulas of Michigan at 128; Oshiro was fifth after a 5-3 win over Rachel Holthaus of Minnesota at 105; and Watase placed seventh after a 4-1 overtime win over Chelsea Fuller of Pennsylvania at 105 pounds.

TEAM BAHAMAS TAKES LEAD AT BILLFISH TOURNEY

Team Bahamas landed a 563-pound marlin yesterday en route to taking the first-day lead at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off the Big Island.

Team Bahamas, fishing on the boat Pamela skippered by Peter Hoogs, earned 1,250 points yesterday. Old South Marlin Club No. 2 of South Carolina is second with 800 points and Malindi Sea Fishing Club of Kenya is third with 600.

The tournament continues through Friday.

HAWAI'I ODP TRYOUTS START AUG. 6

The Hawai'i Olympic Development Program for soccer players is holding district tryouts beginning this week in Kona.

The island district tryout fee is $100. Those who are selected will go to the Hawai'i state tryout in March on O'ahu ($125), and players selected at the Hawai'i state tryout will advance to the Region IV Camp (additional fees).

NO. 15 SEEDS ADVANCE TO KAILUA QUARTERFINALS

Art Lambert and Bruce Nagel, the No. 15 seeds, upset the eighth-seeded team of Dave Andrews and Flavio Nucci, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, last night to reach the quarterfinals of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles.

In other round of 16 matches, Taylor Bedillion and Chris Lam beat Ben Solomon and Charlie Swift, 6-2, 7-6 (7); Jim Somerville and Wei Yu Su defeated Chris James and Jun-Young Kim, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (3); and Chris Leong and Michael Wojnarowicz beat Kai Ohuchi and Greg Takata, 6-2, 6-0.
