WAIKOLOA — Nearly 5,000 people were allowed to return to their homes early today after spending the night with relatives or in emergency shelters because of a large brush fire, officials said.

Hawai'i County fire officials said no damages or injuries were reported, but the blaze did threaten a condominium complex.

The evacuation order was in effect for 75 percent of the town's 6,500 residents and was lifted at 5 a.m., fire officials said.

Hawai'i County Civil Defense Agency acting administrator Lanny Nakano said a community center and an elementary school were turned into evacuation centers, while a local resort opened its ballroom to people fleeing their homes and another school offered dorm rooms.

The fire continued to burn out of control today, consuming more than 25,000 acres along the Kohala Coast on the west side of the island.

Waikoloa Elementary School was closed and students were sent to other area schools.

Firefighters today were battling a second wildfire on the Big Island that scorched about 300 acres. The blaze near the nine-mile marker of Akonipule Highway was caused by a vehicle fire Tuesday night, Nakano said.

No homes or businesses were threatened.
