IMMIGRATION LAW GROUP NAMES HEAD

KahBo Dye-Chiew, an attorney with Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel, has been named chair of the Hawai'i chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which serves Hawai'i and Guam. "I am honored to be named to this vital organization whose mission is to promote justice, advocate for fair and reasonable immigration law and practice," Dye-Chiew said.


WOUNDED TROOPS GET COMPUTERS

The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has given computers to Cody Sharp and Jorge DeLeon of Wahiawa, who were injured serving in the war on terror. The organization awarded computers to wounded servicemen and women who attended its Road to Recovery Conference.


HAWAIIAN HEALTH FOCUS OF AWARDS

Papa Ola Lokahi presented the following with Kaonohi Awards for their commitment to the health of Native Hawaiians: U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka; Patricia Zell, U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs; Patrick DeLeon, with U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye's staff; Betty Jenkins, retired educator; and Benjamin Young, director, Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence, University of Hawai'i medical school.


LANDSCAPE AWARD WINNERS CHOSEN

Gardens and gardeners who received 2005 Betty Crocker Landscape Awards are:

  • Professional landscaping — National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific; the East-West Center Friendship Circle and Garden; World of Aloha Wedding Reception garden in Kahalu'u; the Farrington Highway median strip planted by the state Department of Transportation; and the private garden of Phoebe Cowles in Honolulu.

  • Private gardens — Patricia Rouen, who has helped restore 3.5 acres of native rainforest on Kaua'i's North Shore.

  • Community gardens — Sherman Courtyard, University of Hawai'i at Manoa; Niu Valley Middle School; King Intermediate School; and a courtyard on Pauahi Street in Chinatown.

  • Xeriscape gardens — The Ali'i Kula Lavender Garden in upcountry Maui, the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union; a private Diamond Head residence; and the Bernie Leonard succulent and cacti garden in Waimanalo.
