O'ahu Babe Ruth team wins regional

Reece Kiriu hit a three-run home run and teamed with Paul Snieder on a five-hitter as O'ahu defeated Bakersfield (Calif.), 11-2, yesterday to win the championship of the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) Pacific Southwest Regional at Taylorsville, Utah.

Zachary Kometani had two hits and two RBIs for Hawai'i, which advances to the Babe Ruth World Series, Aug. 13 to 20, in Abedeville, La.

PEARL CITY SENIORS WIN

Shannon Liu pitched a one-hitter and Jeff Domingo had three hits and four RBIs as Pearl City beat Utah, 12-2, yesterday in the Little League Senior (ages 15-16) Western Regional at Beaverton, Ore.

Kellen Ushijima added two hits and two RBIs for Pearl City.

ASA 16S TRIUMPH

Kai Masutani had two hits and an RBI as Hawai'i Kaikamahine defeated the Kansas Mustangs, 4-2, yesterday in the ASA Girls 16-Under National Championship Tournament at Sioux Falls, S.D.


ASA 14S PREVAIL

Lauren Fujisaki drove in Kimberly Okaneku in the top of the sixth inning as the 'Aiea Golden Eagles defeated the Chill (St. Louis, Mo.), 1-0, yesterday in the ASA Girls 14-Under National Championship Tournament at Owensboro, Ky.


YOUTH GOLF


KANEKO ADVANCES

Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko shot a 2-over-par 74 yesterday to clinch a berth in match play of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Roswell, Ga.

Kaneko, who a freshman-to-be at Sacred Hearts Academy, finished the 36-hole qualifying at 146. In-Kyung Kim shot 71—139 to earn medallist honors.

Pearl City's Mari Chun, a 2005 Kamehameha Schools graduate, missed the cut of 154 after shooting 76—156.


TENNIS


NO. 1 SEEDS UPSET

Taylor Bedillion and Chris Lam upset the top-seeded tandem of Ikaika Jobe and Bradley Lum-Tucker, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, last night to reach the semifinals of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles.

Last night's other quarterfinal match was rained out. The three remaining quarterfinals are scheduled to be played tonight.


FISHING


302-POUNDER LANDED

Twenty-one fish, including a 302-pound Pacific blue marlin, were caught yesterday during the 46th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off the Kona Coast.

After two days, 39 fish have been caught, with 31 being tagged and released.

"We might see a 100-plus catch this week," said HIBT founder Peter Fithian.

Old South Marlin Club of North Carolina boated the 302-pounder, but Team Bahamas retained the lead.

UHH SEEKS PLAYERS

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo volleyball program will hold a meeting Sunday for students interested in participating in the 2005 season.

The meeting will start at 4:30 p.m. in the UHH Athletic Complex, Building C, Room 118.
