HILO, Hawai'i — A private foundation is offering a $5,000 reward for information that helps authorities locate a mentally disabled man missing from his Puna home since April 19.

Lt. Randall Medeiros of the Hawai'i County Police Department's East Hawai'i Criminal Investigation Division said yesterday that the disappearance of Daniel Desimone, 45, of Nanawale Estates, remains a mystery. Medeiros said there have been no new clues in the case and no recent sightings of Desimone.

Desimone is described as Caucasian, 5 feet 8, and about 170 pounds. He has blue eyes and thinning brown hair, and likes to collect cans and bottles from the roadside and trash cans.

To help police in their search efforts, the Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation is offering the $5,000 reward.

The fund was established in memory of Carole Sund and daughter Juli Sund and Silvina Pelosso, three Yosemite National Park visitors who disappeared and were later found murdered in February 1999.

Carole Sund's parents, Francis and Carole Carrington, posted rewards for information on the missing women and, as a result, investigators got their first break in the case and found the victims' car, according to Kim Peterson, executive direction of the foundation.

Peterson said the foundation was established to assist families in similar circumstances and, so far, it has paid out $165,500 in rewards.

Anyone with information on Desimone's whereabouts should call Detective Lucille Melemai at (808) 961-2377 or the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311.
