Brian Reece, a 15-year-old competing for the Team Malindi Sea Fishing Club of Kenya, caught a 636 1/2-pound Pacific blue marlin yesterday in the 46th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off the Kona Coast.

Reece also boated a 118-pound ahi and his grandfather, Bob, caught a 150-pound marlin to help Team Malindi take over the tournament lead with 1,737 points.

Team Bahamas is second with 1,550 points, and Buzzard's Angling Club (Calif.) third with 1,300.

Brian Reece also caught a marlin on Monday, but it was nothing compared to the one he landed yesterday.

"We had the fish up to the boat three times, and I was nervous," Reece said. "Grandpa was coaching me from the side and my dad kept bringing me water as I reeled and reeled. I needed to boat this fish because my 17-year-old brother was up on the next watch and this could have easily been his fish."

Fishing continues through tomorrow.
