WE'RE HIP

A reading, a writer and some hip-hop. Honolulu-born author Jeff Chang will read from his 2005 American Book Award-winning "Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation" at Next Door, at 8 p.m. Aug. 12. Chang's book is based on interviews with DJs, rappers, graffiti writers, activists and gang members. Blender magazine praised "Can't Stop Won't Stop" as "the definitive social history of hip-hop."

Chief Xcel of underground hip-hop group Blackalicious follows Chang's reading with a turn at the Next Door turntables.
