Maui seniors honor oldest pair

WAILEA — The Maui Senior Citizens Planning and Coordinating Council named Kazuma Okumura, 97, of Makawao, and Katherine Gerdts, 93, of Kihei, as king and queen of the 33rd "Lei of Aloha" luncheon Saturday at the Wailea Marriott Resort.

Okumura and Gerdts are the oldest male and female members of the council's 43 clubs in Maui County.

The pair said they eat whatever they want and attributed their longevity to the company of good friends and hard work.


ROAD-TEST FACILITY OPENS IN WAILUKU

WAILUKU — The Maui County Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing will begin offering road tests Monday at its new Central Road Testing Facility in front of the War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.

Officials said the facility will free up office space and reduce traffic at the County Service Center in the Maui Mall, where people must now wait to take their road tests.

The DMVL also has a new "Road Test Information" brochure that provides details on preparing vehicles for road tests, how to make an appointment, what documents to bring, and other tips.

The brochures are being given to those applying for learner's permits and through driver's education programs.

FOOD, ACTIVITIES AT PLANTATION FESTIVAL

PU'UNENE — "Bango Bingo" and other traditional activities will be featured at tomorrow's third annual Maui Sugar Plantation Festival on the grounds of the Alexander&Baldwin Sugar Museum in Pu'unene.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with entertainment, a farmers market and craft demonstrations.

The festival is free, with a discounted admission of $1 to the Sugar Museum.

MAN, 24, DIES OFF BEACH AT MAKAHA

A 24-year-old man died after he was pulled from the water off a beach at Makaha yesterday.

Police said the man was found floating face-down near the shoreline at about 5:30 p.m. He was brought to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

The man's name was not released last night. An autopsy will be performed.

REGISTRATION FOR BEACH HULA LINE

Want to hula your way into history?

In celebration of Honolulu's centennial, ResortQuest Hawaii is attempting to organize the longest continuous hula line in history Aug. 20 along Waikiki Beach.

Those who want to participate in "Hula on the Beach" will have to register.

All hula levels, kama'aina and visitors, are welcome. Hula costumes or casual Hawaiian attire and flowers are recommended but not required.

The hula will begin at 4:30 p.m. to Neil McKay's "I Fell-In-Love With Honolulu" sung by Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

To register, e-mail ikaika comm@hawaii.rr.com by Aug. 17. You will need to provide your name, birth date, age, home address, daytime and cell phone numbers and an e-mail address.

Participants also can register on the day of the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at the ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel, 2570 Kalakaua Ave..

INFORMATION ON WIND FARM ONLINE

Hawaiian Electric Co. has posted images and information online about its proposed wind farm project on the ridges above the Kahe Power Plant in Leeward O'ahu.

HECO hosted three community meetings about the windmills in the Leeward Coast area last month and is collecting feedback through Sept. 1 before making a decision whether or not to build two dozen turbines, the company said in a release.
