Make-and-take raku event at Kualoa park

Pack a picnic lunch and point the car toward Kualoa Regional Park, where the annual Raku on the Beach event is in full swing. The main attraction for the public is the community kiln (from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today). For $5, you buy a tea bowl and glaze it; the potters fire it and you take it home.

The event is sponsored by the Hawaii Craftsmen as part of a weeklong celebration of all things raku, the centuries-old Japanese technique of firing ceramics.

While you're waiting for your tea bowl to be fired, check out the potters' creations on the beach. There's also a raffle and ceramic demonstrations until 5 p.m. Admission is free.
