STORY OF MORMON MISSION PRESENTED

Bishop Museum's research seminar series will focus on "The Mormon Voyage of the Whale Ship Timoleon: Launching Latter-day Saint Missionary Work in the Pacific" during a free presentation at 4 p.m. Thursday at the museum's Paki Conference Room I.

Fred E. Woods, a Brigham Young University professor, will share the story of the first Mormon mission to the Pacific through images and first-person journal accounts. Four Latter-day Saint missionaries who left New Bedford, Mass., in October 1843 spent seven months aboard the whaling ship Timoleon before landing in Tubuai and Tahiti.

Woods will also discuss the impact the missionaries had on some of the whalers who modified their behavior in the presence of the missionary passengers.
