Builders find buyer for gazebo
By Eloise Aguiar
A second gazebo built to benefit the American Cancer Society that failed to attract bidders at a recent fundraiser has been sold, boosting the amount raised by the builders to $43,000.
The custom-designed structure caught the eye of an anonymous buyer after a story about its failure to sell appeared in The Advertiser on Tuesday, said Charlie Schmucker, who organized the gazebo construction. It sold the same day, he said.
"I had calls from the Neighbor Islands that wanted to put it on the barge and send it over," he said, adding that about 20 people responded to the story.
Schmucker, contractors and building suppliers donated their time and material to build two gazebos at a cost of $15,000 each that were to be auctioned at the Relay for Life in Kailua on July 9. Neither building sold at the relay but later Schmucker was able to find a buyer for one for $15,000.
Schmucker, his wife, Dianne, and the Kane'ohe Yacht Club Fishing Fleet also helped operate the Cure Cafe that sells clam chowder, fish burgers and dried fish during the relay. It brought in $13,000, he said.
