The Hawai'i Warriors, two outs away from being shut out, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to send the game into extra innings, then scored in the seventh to beat the Cincinnati Flames, 5-4, yesterday in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association (ages 9-younger) championship game.

Seth Kinel singled past a drawn-in infield to score Chansen Fukushima with the winning run at Charles City, Iowa.

Cincinnati scored three runs in the fifth to go up 4-0, but fell apart in the sixth.

The Warriors benefitted from a walk, hit batsman and error to load the bases with one out in the sixth. Ryan Sato broke up Michael Fiacable's no-hit bid with a run-scoring single.

A passed ball and error allowed another run to score.

After a strikeout, Reid Kimura singled in two runs to tie the game.

After Kinel retired the side in order in the seventh, Hawai'i's Fukushima hit a lead-off single, was sacrificed to second by Cal Muramaru and stole third.

Kinel ended it with a hit over second base.

Hawai'i finished the double-elimination tournament with a 9-0 record.

THREE TEAMS IN AUSTRIA

Three American beach volleyball teams are still alive after two days at the A1 Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, Austria. The tournament is the final Grand Slam event of the SWATCH-FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour season.

Punahou graduate Sean Scott and his partner, Todd Rogers, are seeded fifth and have won all three of their matches. They defeated Andrea Scheuerpflug and Christoph Dieckmann of Germany (21-18, 19-21, 15-11) in their only match yesterday. They play the eighth-seeded Brazilian team this morning, with the winner advancing to tomorrow's semifinals.

Kevin Wong, another Punahou graduate, and Dain Blanton lost their only match yesterday, to Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann of Germany (23-21, 25-27, 13-15).

Jake Gibb and Punahou graduate Stein Metzger had three elimination wins to stay in contention. Blanton/Wong and Gibb/Metzger each need three elimination wins today to reach the semifinals.

ALOHA REGION WINS

Aloha Region won the national championship in the High Performance division (for girls born in 1990 or later) at the USAV High Performance Championship recently in Austin, Texas.

The competition featured elite teams from the USA volleyball regions, Canada, and Brazil.

Jordan Meredith, a sophomore at Kamehameha, was chosen Most Valuable Player in the High Performance division. Rebekah Torres, another Kamehameha sophomore, was Best Attacker.

A third Kamehameha sophomore, Kanani Herring, who played for the Red team, was MVP of the Youth National Division.

The Aloha Region also sent two older teams to the IVA Global Challenge in Salt Lake City. The tournament featured clubs from China, Russia, Slovenia and Canada, as well as invited teams from Southern and Northern California, Hawai'i, the intermountain region, and the Pacific Northwest.

The Aloha Region's Youth National team earned second place in the division for girls born in 1988 or later. Elizabeth Ka'aihue, a Punahou junior, was Best Receiver.

The Aloha Region's Junior National team tied for third in the division for players born in 1986 or later. Aneli Otineru, a recent Punahou graduate, was Best Receiver.

USA BOYS FALL TO ITALY

The USA Boys Youth National Team lost to Italy in five games in the bronze-medal match at a tournament held last month in Cabo Frio, Brazil. Hawai'i was represented by Kamehameha junior Jordan Inafuku, Iolani senior Kawika Shoji and Punahou junior Spencer McLachlin.

The U.S. opponents — Brazil, Argentina and Italy — used the tournament as a warmup for the World Championships in Algeria at the end of this month. The USA also qualified, but the State Department would not let it travel to Algeria.

Team USA played each team twice, with all the opponents ranked among the top seven in the world for boys under 18.

Inafuku started every match at libero and led the team in digs. Shoji was the team leader in assists and McLachlin led the U.S. team in kills.
