KNOW YOUR FISHES IN HAWAI'I: A FUN FISH IDENTIFICATION BOOK FOR KIDS, BY WILFRED TOKI; BEACHHOUSE PUBLISHING, HARDCOVER, $12.95

Having spent his childhood in Waialua where fishing was a constant pastime, artist Wilfred Toki was inspired to create this book by the questions of his grandson and the interesting answers he dug up in his research. Every fish, he found, had its own story, and many were the sort that would interest a child. Here, he creates a page-by-page guide that includes the sea creatures' names in English and Hawaiian, an eye-catching caricature, a photograph (by fish experts John P. Hoover and Keoki Stender) and some facts about the fish with an amusing P.S. of some sort (such as that the skin of the leatherback fish can be used to make fishing lures, or that the 'a'awa, Hawaiian hogfish, is an 'aumakua to some families). If you've got an inquisitive young one who enjoys the ocean, this book should be on his or her bookshelf.

PICTURE BOOK BY KAILUA HIGH GRAD

Kailua High School 1969 graduate Anne Bustard is celebrating the publication of her first picture book with Simon and Schuster, "Buddy: The Story of Buddy Holly." Bustard's telling of Buddy Holly's life story is as exuberant as the watercolor, ink and colored pencil illustrations. Born and raised in Hawai'i, Bustard now lives in Holly's native Texas, where she teaches in the education department at the University of Texas-Austin.

Filming of the best-selling young-adult novel "Eragon" begins this month in Budapest, Hungary. The novel sold more than $1 million copies in only six months in 2003. Newcomer Ed Speleers landed the title role of a young man whose destiny is revealed when he learns he is part of an elite troop of Dragon Riders. The film, expected to be released next June, will star Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons and Oscar nominees John Mal-kovich and Djimon Hounsou. "Eragon" is the first novel of a trilogy; the second book, "Eldest," will be published Aug. 23.
