HILO — A 31-year-old Hilo man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting at a Hilo home on Wednesday, police said.

Anthony Carvalho, of no permanent address, was arrested Thursday by members of the police department's Ice Task Force after they discovered him in a Wainaku home while police were serving a federal grand jury indictment in connection with an unrelated case.

Police said that Carvalho fired a shot into the ceiling of the Hilo home shortly before 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, and pointed a rifle at one of the residents before leaving.

No one was injured.

Carvalho was charged with attempted second-degree murder, burglary, violation of court orders, reckless endangerment and firearms offenses.

Carvalho was being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.

BLAZES CONTAINED, FIREFIGHTERS SAY

The brushfires on the Big Island in North and South Kohala were contained and controlled, firefighters said yesterday. The Waikoloa fire burned about 25,000 acres in South Kohala, and the Akoni Pule fire in North Kohala charred about 2,500 acres. All residents and motorists in the area are advised to be on alert for dusty conditions. Hawai'i County firefighters were on the scene for much of the day yesterday to monitor the fire areas.

EAST HONOLULU

CRASH HOSPITALIZES MOTORCYCLIST

A motorcycle crash yesterday backed up traffic for hours by Hanauma Bay and Halona Blow Hole in East Honolulu while police officers investigated the cause of the accident.

The 12:20 p.m. accident occurred about one mile east of Nawiliwili Street, police said. The motorcyclist, a 24-year-old Honolulu man who was not wearing a helmet, lost control and flipped over on Kalaniana'ole Highway.

The motorcycle slid across the road and collided with a 2005 red Jeep driven by a 62-year-old California man, who had a 15-year-old girl passenger with him.

The motorcyclist was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. No one in the Jeep was injured, police said.

Police closed off Kalaniana'ole Highway westbound at Hanauma Bay and eastbound at Halona Blow Hole. The road reopened about 3 p.m.

MOANALUA

NAVY TO BEGIN WORK ON PROJECT

The Navy breaks ground Tuesday morning on the Moanalua Navy Services Center, which will include 55,000 square feet for a community support center and 30,000 square feet of commercial use space.

The project includes the demolition of a 65,000-square-foot shopping center. The center is one mile from Pearl Harbor's Nimitz Gate.

The new development, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2006, will consolidate several Navy quality-of-life services while maintaining commercial space for shopping and dining, the Navy said.

The 51-year-old former Moanalua Shopping Center, on 15 acres, was one of the first of its kind in the Islands.

The new project is the result of an agreement between the Navy and The MacNaughton Group, in which The MacNaughton Group will build a one-stop center for Navy families. The fast-food restaurants and gasoline station that ring the main shopping center will remain.
