It's time to restrict drinking at stadium

spacer

The proposal to turn off the alcohol tap at University of Hawai'i games is a reasoned response to a mounting problem with drunkenness at Aloha Stadium.

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona and UH interim President David McClain have weighed in as favoring the idea, and the Aloha Stadium Authority should approve it, even if it requires a formal rule change. Fighting and other disruptions by drunken fans have led many to conclude that the days of moderate alcohol consumption are behind us and that the excesses of a few would force constraints on those who drink responsibly.

While it will be difficult to enforce, particularly among tailgaters, an outright ban is the only strategy that would result in significant reduction in the problem. Indeed, it will require increased checks for alcohol smuggling at the gate.

It would be unfortunate, however, if UH would lose corporate sponsorship money from beer makers.

Officials should work to maintain the support, which should be possible because beer and wine sales are continuing at Stan Sheriff Arena and Les Murakami Stadium events.

Of course, the majority of people who attend UH games have been able to have a few drinks and watch the game peaceably. But public safety is best ensured by curbing alcohol consumption for everyone.
