Mililani Prep stays unbeaten in softball

Sarah Weisskopf struck out 11 and pitched a five-hitter and Valana Manuma hit a two-run homer and had four RBIs yesterday to lead Mililani Prep to a 6-1 victory over the Utah Crusherzz to remain undefeated at the Amateur Softball Association 18-under Western Tournament at Portland, Ore.

Weisskopf, a Punahou graduate, was this year's The Advertiser's softball player of the year. Manuma is a Kapolei High alum.

Mililani Prep (4-0) plays the tournament's other undefeated team, Southern California's Sorcerer 18A, today in the tournament's final day.

Mililani Prep's Cheynah Farley, a Castle High senior, went 2 for 2 against Utah.

Tina Noga pitched a one-hitter and struck out 13 in Mililani Prep's 7-0 victory over the California Sting on Friday. Manuma was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Mililani.

GUAVA JAM ELIMINATED

The Southern Cal Crunch eliminated Guava Jam (Mililani), 5-3, at the Amateur Softball Association 14-under Western Tournament yesterday at Clovis, Calif.

Kristi Oshiro had two hits for Guava Jam.


BASEBALL


PEARL CITY UNBEATEN

Kurt Poentis and Edwin Izumigawa combined on a five-inning no-hitter to lead Pearl City to a 13-1 victory over Spring Valley of Las Vegas, yesterday in the Little League Juniors (13-14) Western Regional at Forest Grove, Ore.

Pearl City (3-0) plays host Lake Oswego, Ore., today in pool play.

Jordan Casarez had two singles and three RBIs and Joshua Manuma also had two singles for Pearl City.


HAWAI'I SPLITS TWO

Hawai'i split two games yesterday at the Babe Ruth 13-year-olds Southwest Regional Tournament at Panguitch, Utah.

La Crescenta, Calif., defeated Hawai'i, 13-6, then Hawai'i came back to defeat Richfield, Utah, 10-0.

In the first game, Jarrett Arakawa was 3 for 5, including a double for Hawai'i. Reid Miyasato, Eric Molnar, Chris Geiger and Michael Suiter each paired hits.

Arakawa and Tyson Tsutsumi combined on a three-hit shutout in the five-inning victory over Richfield.

Matt Nishiyama led Hawai'i with two doubles and two RBIs. Shelton Lee hit a two-run homer.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL


ROGERS, SCOTT IN SEMIS

Todd Rogers and Punahou alum Sean Scott yesterday advanced to the semifinals of the Austria Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Scott and Rogers defeated Dain Blanton and Punahou alum Kevin Wong, 21-14, 21-19, in the final FIVB (international) tournament of the season.

Rogers and Scott face Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Costa Santos of Brazil today.
