Six people were injured when a car rear-ended a pickup truck early yesterday in Wai'anae, prompting police to close a section of Farrington Highway for nearly seven hours.

Police said two eastbound vehicles crashed about 430 feet west of Ala Akau Street. The accident was reported to police at 12:55 a.m. The two eastbound lanes and one of the westbound lanes of Farrington Highway fronting Wai'anae High School were closed from 1:40 to 8:11 a.m.

Those who were injured were all in a 2003 Chevy pickup truck, police acting Sgt. Lisa Reed said.

Two women, ages 25 and 24, and a man, 20, were thrown from the bed of the truck when it was rear-ended by a 1992 Mazda sedan, which was speeding, according to witnesses, Reed said. They were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition but their condition has improved, Reed said.

Three women riding in the cab of the truck — ages 24, 21 and 19 — were also taken to Queen's in serious condition. Their condition has also been upgraded, Reed said.

The car's driver, a 21-year-old Wai'anae man, fled on foot before police arrived. He was arrested for failure to render aid at 4 a.m. by patrol officers on Wai'anae Valley Road. The man was still at HPD's main station cellblock late yesterday afternoon.

Reed said speed and alcohol appear to have been factors.
