Mililani Prep captures softball title

Tina Noga pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts as Mililani Prep defeated the Cal Haze, 1-0, yesterday to capture the American Softball Association's 18-Under A Western National Championships at Portland, Ore.

Noga and Liane Horiuchi each had two hits, and Anita Manuma drove in Horiuchi with a two-out double in the bottom of the first inning.

Mililani Prep finished the tournament with a 6-0 record.

Earlier in the day, Sarah Weisskopf pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts as Mililani Prep beat the Southern California Sorcerers, 4-2, to reach the title game.

Weisskopf, Noga and Kelly Nishitomi each had two hits, with Noga hitting a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.

Noga replaced Weisskopf in the seventh when the Sorcerers scored both of their runs. She struck out two batters to earn the save.

Elsewhere, Kupono of Mililani finished third in the ASA 12-Under B Western National Championships Saturday at Mount Vernon, Wash.

Kupono's Courtney Senas won the tournament's home run derby contest.


TRACK AND FIELD


MASTERS WRAPS UP

Johnnye Valien set two American records in the women's 80 age group yesterday as the 38th USATF National Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships concluded its four-day run at the University of Hawai'i's Cooke Field.

Valien, of Los Angeles, won the triple jump with a leap of 16 feet, 9 3/4 inches to beat the 2002 mark of 15-1 1/4. In the javelin, Valien had a toss of 58-8 to shatter the 1998 record of 44-5.

Clarence Trahan, of Hemet, Calif., was a double-winner yesterday, setting an American record in the men's 90 age group in the triple jump with a leap of 20 1/4 to top the 1990 mark of 18-1. Trahan also won the 200 meters in 48.19 seconds.

Among Hawai'i competitors, the Hawai'i Track Masters B team won the men's 60-69 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4 minutes, 30.59 seconds. The team is made up of Walter Ritte, John Karbens, Geoff Howard and Stanford Kuroda.

Hawai'i's Wah Berman captured the women's 55 division 1,500 in 6:29.92.

Rita Hanscom, a UH alum, won the women's 50 division in the 200 in 28.24.


YOUTH BASEBALL


PEARL CITY SENIORS 4-0

Ryno Acosta batted 4 for 4 and Scott Muraoka homered as Pearl City pounded Billings, Mont., 19-2 yesterday in the Little League Senior (ages 15-16) Western Regional at Beaverton, Ore.

Matthew Tanaid and Nainoa Tampos each had three hits for Pearl City (4-0), which plays Vancouver, Wash., (3-1) today.


PEARL CITY JUNIORS 4-0

Alika Pruett pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as Pearl City beat Lake Oswego, Ore., 2-0, yesterday in the Little League Junior (ages 13-14) Western Regional at Forest Grove, Ore.

Pruett and Jordan Casarez drove in runs for Pearl City (4-0), which plays Douglas, Ariz., tomorrow.


WEST O'AHU MAJORS 1-0

Alakai Aglipay pitched a one-hitter and Sheyne Baniaga had four hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs as West O'ahu trounced Beaverton, Ore., 17-1, yesterday in the Little League Major (ages 11-12) Northwest Regional at San Bernardino, Calif.

Kini Enos added three hits and three RBIs and Vonn Feao homered for West O'ahu (1-0), which plays Boise, Idaho, today.


SAILING


PEGASUS PREVAILS

Philippe Kahn's Transpac 52 Pegasus captured Division 1 and overall honors Saturday in the 2005 Waikiki Offshore Series.

Pegasus placed first in eight of nine races to earn the King Kamehameha Trophy.

Dave Nottage's J44 Kaimiloa III recovered from a broken boom in the eighth race to finish first in Division 2 and second overall. Kaimiloa also won the award for top Hawaiian boat.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL


SCOTT, ROGERS FOURTH

Punahou grad Sean Scott and Todd Rogers lost two matches yesterday and finished fourth in the A1 Grand Slam at Klagenfurt, Austria.

Scott and Rogers fell to Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil, 21-19, 21-15, in the semifinals before losing the bronze-medal match to Marco Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil, 21-15, 21-15.

Scott and Rogers split $16,900 in matching their highest finish of the season.

Germany's Christoph Dieckmann and Andreas Scheuerpflug defeated Rego and Santos, 21-18, 15-21, 16-14, in the gold-medal match.


SWIMMING


'BOW 4TH AT NATIONALS

Melanie Schlanger, a sophomore-to-be at the University of Hawai'i, finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle as the ConocoPhillips U.S. National Championships that concluded yesterday at Irvine, Calif.

Schlanger was timed in 25.88 seconds. Amanda Weir, of Swim Atlanta, won in 25.45.

Iolani graduate Hongzhe Sun, who will be a junior at Stanford, placed fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.74. Timothy Liebhold, of Wisconsin, won in 2:01.75.
