West O'ahu rolls to Major win, 16-5

Vonn Feao batted 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs as West O'ahu routed Idaho, 16-5, in the Little League Major (ages 11-12) Northwest Regional at San Bernardino, Calif., yesterday.

Feao's grand slam capped a six-run top of the fifth inning for West O'ahu (2-0), which will play Montana tomorrow at 6:30 a.m. (Hawai'i time).

The game was halted after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Alakai Aglipay, Shayne Baniaga and Feao each scored three runs for West O'ahu.

West O'ahu's Kini Enos pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts.


PEARL CITY SENIORS IMPROVE TO 5-0

Ryno Acosta drove in three runs, and Nainoa Tampos and Chad Quillopo each added two RBIs as Pearl City beat Washington, 11-3, yesterday in the Little League (ages 15-16) Western Regional at Beaverton, Ore.

Pearl City's Scott Muraoka and Shannon Liu combined on a four-hitter.

Pearl City, which improved to 5-0 in the tournament, will play Arizona tomorrow.


O'AHU BABE RUTH 13S FINISH IN FOURTH PLACE

The O'ahu Babe Ruth 13s finished in fourth place at the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament at Panguitch, Utah.

O'ahu, which finished with a 2-2 record, fell to Central California, 11-0, on Sunday.

Matt Nishiyama, who batted .500 and had seven RBIs for the tournament, was named to the all-tournament team.


GOLF


MORRISON, MITCHELL LEAD CLUB PRO EVENT

Mark Morrison and Tim Mitchell shot even-par 72s yesterday in the first round of the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship at Puakea Golf Course on Kaua'i.

Morrison (Swing & Play the Easy Way) and Mitchell (Wailea GC) lead five others by one stroke.

The top three finishers will represent the Aloha Section in the PGA Club Professional Championship, June 22 to 25 at Turning Stone Casino Resort in Verona, N.Y.

The final round begins today at 7:30 a.m.


TRACK FIELD


UH'S BUCHANAN SETS SCHOOL MARK IN 1,500

University of Hawai'i junior-to-be Dana Buchanan set a school record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:26.12 last week at Ottawa, Ontario.

Buchanan, who finished second in the race, broke Kelly Young's school record.

Buchanan represented an Ottawa club at the meet.

She will next compete in the Canada Games, Aug. 15 to 20 in Saskatchewan.


TENNIS


5 UH ATHLETES NAMED ITA SCHOLAR ATHLETES

Five University of Hawai'i athletes were named to the Interscholastic Tennis Association's Scholar-Athlete team.

Outgoing Rainbow Wahine seniors Justine Boutet, Kimberly Curtis and Lauren Fitzgerald, and junior-to-be Kana Aikawa were honored. Senior-to-be Bryon Weinberg was also honored.

All five student-athletes received a 3.5 GPA or higher during the past academic year.

The Rainbow Wahine earned ITA All-Academic team honors with a combined GPA of 3.34.
