Income inequality increased in Hawaii during the past two decades, according to a new study published by two Washington, D.C., think tanks.

By the late 1990s the richest 20 percent of Hawaii families had incomes nearly 10 times as large as incomes of the poorest 20 percent of the families. That compared to the late 1970s when the incomes of the richest 20 percent were just seven times as large as those of the poorest 20 percent.

The study by the Economic Policy Institute, and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that the increase in gap between the rich and poor in Hawaii during the period was the 13th greatest in the nation. The study also found that the increase in the gap between the rich and middle class in Hawaii was the 12th greatest in the nation.

Hawaiian Air gets top ranking in Travel + Leisure magazine

Hawaiian Airlines was rated the best domestic airline serving Hawaii by Travel + Leisure magazine in its "World's Best Awards" for 2005. It was the seventh year in row Hawaiian Airlines won the award.

The awards are published in this month's edition of Travel + Leisure. The ratings are derived from a survey in which air travelers rate airlines in five categories: cabin comfort, food, in-flight service, customer service and value.
