The Army yesterday was investigating why five steel drums were left on the side of the road leading to Mililani Memorial Park and the Waiawa Correctional Facility.

The drums were discovered yesterday and, as a precaution, police closed the roadway about 1 p.m. while the fire department's hazardous materials unit checked them for chemical content.

Firefighters determined there was no risk. Police reopened the road at 2:22 p.m.

The drums were turned over to Schofield Barracks officials because shipping labels indicated they belonged to the Army. Stefanie Gardin of the Army's public affairs office at Schofield said two of the drums were empty and three contained packing materials.

"Generally speaking, if you see anyone behaving suspiciously, please make a note of any details — license plate or car description — and call the proper authorities," Williams said.

A 55-year-old Waipahu man was arrested in Wahiawa early yesterday morning after police officers found a motorcycle that had been reported stolen in the back of the pickup truck the man was driving.

A police officer was on routine patrol when he spotted the red motorcycle about 1:30 a.m. in the bed of the pickup, which was parked at a residence near the corner of Wilikina Drive and Lake View Circle.

The officer checked on the motorcycle's license plate and learned the cycle had been reported stolen.
