A 26-year-old homeless man suspected of burglarizing a Makakilo home yesterday evening helped police identify him as the culprit by using the video camera he allegedly stole from the home to film himself leaving.

Police said the suspects voice can also be heard on the videotape describing the burglary.

A patrol officer was sent to the Makakilo home to investigate a burglary report. At the same time, other officers came across a man in the Ko Olina area and realized that he was wanted for several contempt of court warrants.

While police were questioning the man after pulling his car over on Aliinui Drive in Ko Olina at approximately 7 p.m., they noticed the video camera in his car and learned from the officer investigating the Makakilo burglary that it was the same make and model as the one taken in the break-in.

Police then took the burglary victim to where the suspect was being detained and he identified the camera as his own.

While checking the video camera for damage, the owner found the tape footage of the suspect documenting his involvement in the burglary, police said.

The man police were detaining was then arrested for suspicion of first-degree burglary. Drugs and a drug pipe were found as he was being pat searched, leading to arrests for suspicion of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on several contempt of court warrants as well.

Wife hits husband with flashlight, wields knife

Police are checking into a report filed by a 40-year-old Kaimuki man who said his wife attacked him Tuesday evening and held him captive at the couple's Wai'alae Avenue home overnight.

The husband told police that when he got home from work about 11:30 p.m., his wife attacked him with a "Maglite" flashlight, striking him in the head and body. The husband told police he ran to the bedroom to try to get away from the wife, 34, but she followed right behind him, picked up a knife and threatened him.

The husband said that moments later, he could hear police knocking at his front door. He said he was just about to call for help when the wife held the knife to his throat and told him she would kill him if he said anything.

The man told police he was afraid and stayed on his bed until yesterday morning, when he was able to flee from the home and call police.

The wife was arrested without incident about 11 a.m. yesterday for suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.

The clerk said the man appeared intoxicated, pulled out a butterfly knife and threatened to harm him.

Police said the assailant left the store but was stopped nearby by police officers and positively identified by the victim and a witness.
