Inmate captured in raid on home

Big Island police yesterday arrested a 38-year-old Hawai'i Community Correctional Center escapee during a raid on a Hilo residence.

Christopher Neal Nasario, who was declared an escapee when he failed to report his whereabouts to HCCC staff in April, was arrested at a Railroad Avenue home at 11 a.m. by East Hawai'i vice officers.

Nasario has been charged with second-degree escape.


DRIVEWAY DEATH IS 21ST FATALITY

HILO — An 84-year-old Hilo woman died Tuesday after her neighbor backed his car into her while she was weeding a grassy strip off a Wailuku Street driveway just above Waiau Street.

Police Sgt. Christopher Gali said Fumiko Iko died at 5:15 p.m. at the Hilo Medical Center, about a half-hour after the accident.

Gali said Iko was kneeling while weeding the strip between the end of the driveway and the road when the 68-year-old driver reversed from the driveway in a 1990 Ford sedan and hit her.

Her death is the 21st traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 25 at the same time last year.

BREAK IN MAIN CUTS OFF WATER

Ninety-five households on Wikao Street near Mililani Technology Park were without water service yesterday because of a main break.

The break in the 12-inch main fronting 95-660 Wikao St. was reported at 3:19 p.m.

Only one lane was open to traffic in the area because of repair work. The Board of Water Supply expected to finish repair work early this morning.

UH TO GRADUATE 800 ON SUNDAY

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa will hold commencement exercises for about 800 students at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Arena on campus.

Actor George Takei, best known for his portrayal of Mr. Sulu in the TV series "Star Trek," will be the keynote speaker.

Doors to the arena will open at 8 a.m. for the combined undergraduate and graduate ceremony. The event is free, with open seating. Balloons and strollers are not allowed inside the building. Free parking is available in the lower campus parking structure and lei vendors will be in front of the Les Murakami Stadium.

HPU GRADUATION NEXT THURSDAY

More than 350 Hawai'i Pacific University students will graduate during the school's summer commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday at the Waikiki Shell.

Louanne Kennedy, retired vice president of academic affairs and provost at California State University Northridge, will deliver the commencement address.

Kennedy has served as a planning consultant with HPU President Chatt Wright for the past five years. Valedictory speakers will be Melissa Opacic, Anna Dihne and Richard DesJardin.

PRIME-RIB PICKUP TO RAISE FUNDS

The Friends of Roosevelt Project Grad are holding a "Prime Rib to Go" fundraiser with meal pickup from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 10.

BOARD TO OUTLINE WATERSHED PLAN

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply will conduct a community meeting to discuss the Ko'olau Loa Watershed Management Plan from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hau'ula Civic Center, 54-010 Kukuna Road.

The working group is helping to develop an environmentally holistic, community-based watershed management plan that will be used to guide preservation and restoration of watersheds in the Ko'olau Loa district of Windward O'ahu.

Another goal is to ensure sustainable ground- and surface-water resources for future generations.
