A 26-year-old homeless man arrested on suspicion of burglarizing a Makakilo home Wednesday used a video camera he stole from the home to film himself leaving the scene, police said.

Police said the man's voice can also be heard on the videotape describing the burglary.

A patrol officer was sent to the Makakilo home to investigate a burglary report. At the same time, other officers came across a man in the Ko Olina area and realized that he was wanted for several contempt of court warrants.

Police were questioning the man after pulling his car over on Aliinui Drive in Ko Olina at 7 p.m., when they saw the video camera in his car. They learned from the officer investigating the Makakilo burglary that it was the same make and model as the one taken in the break-in.

Police said they brought the burglary victim to where the suspect was being detained and he identified the camera as his own.

While checking the video camera for damage, the owner found the tape footage of the suspect documenting his involvement in the burglary, police said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and drug charges and several contempt of court warrants.
