$10,000 TO HELP DIABETES RESEARCH

The Harold L. Castle Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Hawai'i Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The funds will support research leading to a cure for diabetes.


OHA AWARDS SEVERAL GRANTS

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has awarded the following grants:

  • $24,000 to help expand the Hawaiian electronic library, Ulukau. The funds will enable the library to add 30 books to its resources. It is available at ulukau.org.

  • $49,850 to ALU LIKE to add a collection of genealogical indexes from the Hawai'i State Archives to Ulukau.

  • $15,000 to Hale Ku'ai Cooperative under the Community-Based Economic Development program to help with wholesale distribution and Internet development. Hale Ku'ai supports Hawaiian entrepreneurship and the marketing of quality products and services made by Native Hawaiians. Access their e-store at: www.halekuai.com.

  • $40,000 to Ho'omau Ke Ola Substance Abuse Treatment Center to include day treatment and outreach services, as well as residential treatment.


    WATUMULL ASSISTS ASTHMATIC KIDS

    The Jhamandus Watumull Fund has awarded $1,000 to the American Lung Association of Hawai'i for its Open Airways for Schools program for students with mild to severe asthma ages 8 to 11.

    Open Airways' goals are to teach students asthma-management skills, help them become self-empowered, and improve school performance.


    REPAIRS PLANNED AT KIHEI SCHOOL

    Kai Malu at Wailea provided the funding and Hawai'i 3R's obtained a matching grant to make possible repairs to Kihei Elementary School this summer. Among the repairs and improvements were installation of dead bolts on all classroom doors, purchase and installation of air conditioners and painting of the exteriors of school buildings.
