Cooling cosmetics like these can make a muggy day feel breezy. Ingredients such as eucalyptus, menthol and mint can feel cooling on the skin and as a scent.

In search of relief, we went sleuthing for products that can help you keep cool during the dog days of summer. Some can be found in supermarkets for a few dollars, others are high-end innovations from cosmetics firms.

Of course, you can always put your favorite toner or eau de toilette in the fridge for a cooling sensation any time of day. Look for ingredients such as citrus, mint, cucumber, chamomile, eucalyptus and basil.

SPLASH OFF

  • In a lukewarm shower, try a cooling body wash instead of soap. Molton Brown's Cool Mentha Sports Wash (Neiman Marcus) contains a combination of the oils listed above.

  • Not near a shower? Bioré has a new product called Blemish Ice Fighting Cleanser that comes in a face wash as well as portable cleansing cloths that offer an instant pick-me-up (drugstores).

  • When you emerge from the shower, keep the cool coming with refreshing body sprays. Calgon's Caribbean Mint Body Mist ($6.95, Longs Drug Store) has a refreshing hint of mint. Or try Caudalie's Beauty Elixir, with oils of rosemary, orange and peppermint (Sephora).

    FACIALS AND FRAGRANCE

  • Origins makes an aromatherapy oil called Peace of Mind, with peppermint, eucalyptus and basil. Place a couple of drops on finger tips and touch the back of the neck and temples to relax and cool ($10, Origins, Macy's).

  • Fresh, citrusy scents in your home can offer a cooling effect — without air conditioning. Alora by localite Annie Hope offers about eight months of scent ($45-$76, Baik Designs in Gentry Pacific Center, Hyatt Regency Spa). Verde is especially refreshing.

  • A relaxing facial can cool you off, and you can do it yourself at home. Begin by exfoliating. Follow with an ice-cold toner and apply a cooling mask. You can make one with egg whites, avocado or cucumber (try Valerie Ann Worwood's "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," New World Library, for recipes or go to www.aromaweb .com).

  • For a splurge, try the latest innovation from high-tech, Barcelona-based Natura Bissé. It's called Ice Lift, and is available only in Hawai'i, having had its worldwide launch at Neiman Marcus here last month. It's a luxury ($140 a tube for a dozen facials) mask with an intense cooling sensation that offers an instant lift to the face.

    ADDED BEAUTY BENEFITS

A few cosmetics firms are combining anti-cellulite treatments with soothing ingredients. We found Total Body Lift at Macy's ($56.50) and a three-step system for cleansing, toning and firming called Body Definition Treatment by The Healing Garden ($6.95-$12.95 per step, at drugstores).

For too-hot lips, Sephora will soon stock Einstein Lip Theory ($6), a moisturizer that tingles and cools.
