Titans, top pick not close to deal

Negotiations between Adam "Pacman" Jones and the Tennessee Titans reached an impasse yesterday, the cornerback's agent said before returning to Jacksonville, Fla.

That was news to general manager Floyd Reese.

Agent Michael Huyghue issued a statement yesterday, saying the sides have not been able to reach agreement.

"I don't think I've ever seen this," Reese said an hour before the Titans kicked off their opening preseason game against Tampa Bay. "So this one's kind of new. I've only been doing this for 30 years, and this is the first time the press got an e-mail and the GM didn't."

Huyghue flew into town Thursday hoping to conclude a contract for Jones, the No. 6 pick in this year's draft and the first defensive player taken. Huyghue told reporters Thursday that he and Jones know that time is crucial if the cornerback is to have a chance of a productive rookie season.

Jones has remained in Jacksonville where he is working out with a personal trainer.

Huyghue said the Titans' total offer was less money than given to cornerback Antrel Rolle, the eighth pick of the draft by Arizona. Rolle signed a six-year, $43 million contract Tuesday with $13.6 million in guaranteed money.

"While we made some initial progress in our negotiations, ultimately, the Titans have refused to offer a fair market deal to Adam," Huyghue said.

Reese said he met for less than two hours with Huyghue on Thursday and wasn't told that they had reached an impasse. He said the Titans' offer was slotted at $18 million, between the $19 million for Tampa Bay running back Carnell Williams and $17 million for No. 7 pick Troy Williamson.

"We didn't spend much time negotiating, I tell you that," he said.

COLTS

DEFENSIVE END ADIBI ON INJURED RESERVE

Indianapolis placed defensive end Nathaniel Adibi on injured reserve and re-signed defensive tackle Blake Lobel yesterday.

Adibi missed practice all week with a shoulder injury. He joins offensive lineman Cody Campbell as the second player to be put on injured reserve this week. Campbell also has a shoulder injury.

Lobel signed with the Colts in April as an undrafted free agent. Lobel played at San Diego State.

Rookies Matt Ulrich and Marlin Jackson, Indianapolis' first-round draft pick, both returned to practice yesterday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at Terre Haute, Ind.

Ulrich, an offensive lineman, was taken by ambulance to Terre Haute's Union Hospital on Thursday, after showing signs of heat exhaustion. He was released later Thursday.

Jackson, who sat out Thursday afternoon with a hip flexor injury, also practiced with his teammates and might play Saturday night against Buffalo in the Colts' second preseason game.

BILLS

WIDE RECEIVER PARRISH HAS WRIST SURGERY

Buffalo wide receiver Roscoe Parrish had surgery on his injured right wrist yesterday, but the rookie is expected to play this season.

The second-round draft pick out of Miami fell on his right wrist while diving for a pass during training camp Wednesday. The Bills, who will play their preseason opener in Indianapolis on Saturday, didn't announce the nature of Parrish's injury or give a timetable for his return.

The surgery took place after Parrish returned to Buffalo on Thursday to review test results with the team's medical director, Dr. John Marzo.
