Kalani Legion team unbeaten in regional

Kalani scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Nevada-Host, 10-7, yesterday in the American Legion Western Regional at Las Vegas.

Randy Kitagawa had three hits and three RBIs, and Kasey Ko and Greg Hackler each added two hits and two RBIs for Kalani, which trailed 5-0 after four innings.

Kitagawa had a two-run double and Hackler a two-run single in Kalani's eighth-inning rally. Kaohi Downing, Neale Asato and Landon Nakata contributed RBI doubles.

Downing worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth, striking out the final two batters to earn the save.

Kalani (3-0) plays Arizona (2-1) today.


RUTH WORLD SERIES


O'AHU CAPTURES OPENER

Joshua Bninski and Reece Kiriu homered as O'ahu defeated North Syracuse, N.Y., 12-4, yesterday in the opening round of the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) World Series at Abbeville, La.

Bninski also doubled in support of winning pitcher Paul Snieder.

O'ahu scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to overcome an early 3-0 deficit.

O'ahu continues pool play tomorrow with a game against Phoenix, Ore.

O'AHU WINS OPENER

Kewby Meyer and Jordan DePonte teamed on a no-hitter as O'ahu defeated Willamette Valley, Ore., 3-1, yesterday in a first-round game of the Cal Ripken World Series (ages 12-under) at Aberdeen, Md.

Meyer worked five innings, giving up a run while walking four and striking out 10. DePonte, who also batted 2 for 3, walked one in one inning.

Ryan Yamane had two hits and two RBIs and Gavin Okada added two hits for O'ahu, which plays Marblehead, Mass., today at 2 p.m., Hawai'i time.
