Hawai'i gas price hits record $2.749

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Hawai'i hit a record high $2.749 today, but the state was overtaken by California for the highest gas prices in the nation, according to AAA.

California hit a record $2.758, followed by Hawai'i, Nevada ($2.654) and Washington state ($2.631), the auto club said.

The record high was 5 cents higher than yesterday, about 15 cents higher than a month ago and about 39 cents higher than a year ago. The national average also hit a record $2.484 today, AAA said. Maui had the highest fuel prices in Hawai'i at $2.949 a gallon for regular. Meanwhile, both the Big Island and O'ahu set new record highs today. The Big Island's average was $2.749 and Honolulu was at $2.653.



Applications accepted for 'Exporter of the Year' program

The State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism is accepting applications for its "Exporter of the Year" program.

Nominations are being accepted in six sectors: fresh commodities, professional services, the arts, manufactured products, high technology and new exporter. Nominees will be evaluated based on a host of considerations, including being registered to business in the state of Hawai'i, having sustained profitability and growth, and having opened a new trade area previously closed to American companies.

Nominees must have a sponsoring organization, such as a financial institution, certified public accountant or business/industry association, to submit an application. The deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m., Sept. 30. For more information, call 587-2584.



California real estate firm buys Kalihi industrial space

California-based real estate firm Voit Development Co. has bought 250,000 square feet of industrial space in Kalihi from The Weiser Cos. for an undisclosed price.

Voit said the purchase is part of a plan to acquire one million to two million square feet of industrial property in Honolulu.

Besides the recent purchase, which comprises seven buildings on a long-term ground lease, Voit owns about 200,000 square feet of industrial property in the Sand Island area.
