Cooperating on school makeover

Hawai'i 3R's

Kapunahala Elementary School's cafeteria got a facelift when the Navy's VP-47 Squadron and other community volunteers joined forces Aug. 6 to paint the building's interior and exterior.

The effort was supported by a grant from the Hawai'i 3R's program and the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation. The $128,434 grant also covered replacement of carpet, floors, doors and lockers; and improvements to drainage in a football field and parking lot.

The two organizations have formed a partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps Base Hawai'i to fund repair and maintenance projects at O'ahu schools — 'Ahuimanu, 'Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kailua, Kane'ohe, Kapunahala, Mokapu, Pope, Sunset Beach and Waiahole elementary schools; Castle and Kalaheo high schools; and Kahuku High & Intermediate School and Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School.

The partnership expects to complete 14 projects by summer's end.
