NANAKULI — More than 100 Honolulu and federal firefighters — roughly one-third of the Honolulu Fire Department's resources — are continuing to battle the Nanakuli fire for a third straight day.

The fire remains out of control, having burned more than 2,000 acres as of late last night.

Nine helicopters are being used to combat the fire, which spread to Farrington Highway and forced lane closures this morning.

Two lanes for Honolulu-bound traffic and one lane for Waianae-bound traffic, which were closed at 8 a.m. because of thick smoke on the roadway, have re-opened. There may be additional closures along Farrington Highway today, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The Kolekole Pass will also be available as an alternate route for motorists traveling to and from the Wai'anae Coast until 6 p.m. For safety reasons, heavy commercial vehicles will not be allowed through the pass.

The 4-mile Kolekole Pass runs through the Ko'olau Range and connects with Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa.

"If it hasn't eclipsed the biggest fire of the season already, it will," Capt. Emmitt Kane of Honolulu Fire Department.
