Left-hander Evan Yamamoto, a Punahou sophomore, threw a no-hitter and drove in two runs to lead O'ahu to a 10-0 victory over Phoenix-Talent, Ore., yesterday in the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) World Series at Abbeville, La.

Yamamoto faced the minimum 18 batters, striking out four, inducing 11 ground-ball outs.

The only Phoenix-Talent baserunner reached on an error in the third inning. The runner was later caught attempting to steal.

"I was throwing a fastball, curveball, cutter, and they were all working for strikes," said Yamamoto, who recorded his first career no-hitter.

"They weren't having solid contact with the ball. I would get ahead with the fastball and throw curveballs after."

Said coach Eric Kadooka: "We scouted them last night (Sunday) and (noticed) they had a hard time hitting off-speed pitches. So we tried to mix it up as far as our pitch-calling, basically getting ahead of their batters."

Matthew Suiter, who batted 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, gave O'ahu an early lead with a homer to lead off the second.

The game, however, was close until O'ahu scored two runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth. Yamamoto had RBI singles in both innings. Suiter had a two-run double in the sixth.

The game was called after the sixth because of the 10-run rule.

O'ahu's next game is tomorrow against Jefferson Parish, La.

PEARL CITY SENIORS WIN

Arle Johnson hit a three-run home run and Bryson Nakamura and Alika Pruett added homers to lift Pearl City to a 11-5 victory yesterday over Freehold Township, N.J., in the Little League Junior (13-14) World Series in Taylor, Mich.

Johnson hit a 315-foot homer to right-center field in the third inning to give Pearl City a 6-0 lead. Nakamura hit a two-run shot to center field (340 feet) in the first inning and Pruett added a solo shot to center field in the fourth inning.

Pearl City (1-0) plays West Side Lions Little League of Fort Worth, Texas in pool play today.

PEARL CITY JUNIORS WIN

Rorry Nakayama's two-run triple in the sixth snapped a 3-all tie and propelled Pearl City to a 6-3 victory over Habersham of Clarkesville, Ga., in the Little League Senior (14-16) World Series at Bangor, Maine.

After Habersham scored two runs in the top of the inning to tie it at 3, Pearl City roared back.

Jason Rasa and Chad Quillopo walked and later executed a double steal. Nakayama followed with his hit to right. Nakayama later scored on an error.

Shannon Liu pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs, striking out five in seven innings.

Liu, Kellen Ushijima and Ryne Acosta each had two hits for Pearl City, which is 2-0 and faces Westfort International of Thunder Bay, Ontario, today in another pool-play game.

KALANI LEGIONS LOSE

Scott Berke hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to help lift host Sierra Vista, Nev., to a 3-1 victory over Kalani and force a second game today for the American Legion (18-under) Western Regional championship in Las Vegas.

Kalani (4-1) entered the game as the only undefeated team in the double-elimination tournament. The winner of today's game goes to the American Legion World Series, Aug. 19-23, in Rapid City, N.D.

Kalani scored its only run in the top of the ninth when Landon Nakata doubled, then scored on a triple by Marc Factora.
