Here are a few quick suggestions to liven up lunch fare:

  • Choose easy-to-eat fruits; peel and cut into pieces.

  • Pair tuna salad, peanut butter or cheese spread with rice cakes (pack separately).

  • Cold pizza is a relatively healthful option, and many kids love it.

  • Make or buy mini-muffins.

  • Cut sandwiches into diamonds, triangles, rectangles or other shapes.

  • Make your own trail mix with cereal, raisins, nuts, mini-pretzels, fruit gummies.

  • Naturally sweetened fruit cocktail can be packed in a container to mix with yogurt.

  • Mix cream cheese with raisins and a dash of honey to spread on graham crackers.

  • Pack string cheese and ham sticks with a honey-mustard sauce for dipping.

  • Look over your favorite appetizer recipes with your child's lunch in mind.

  • Choose lower-sugar, lower-fat granola bars and fruit Newtons for sweet snacks.

  • Mix shredded carrots with raisins, unflavored yogurt and a bit of honey for a crunchy salad.

  • Make fruit kabobs using thin strips of celery for skewers.

  • Pair cut veggies with seasoned cream cheese.

  • Pack a zip-closure bag of low-fat microwave popcorn.
