Mililani's Kia out with leg injury

One of the top college prospects in the state will miss about half the high school football season with a leg injury.

Mililani High senior left tackle Micah Kia fractured his right tibia during a scrimmage Saturday at Saint Louis School, Trojans' coach James Millwood said.

Kia, listed at 6 feet 5 and 280 pounds, is ranked 25th among the top 100 players in the West region by SchoolSports High School Football magazine. He is the highest-rated Hawai'i player.

Kia, whose brother Aaron is a freshman offensive lineman with the University of Hawai'i, is expected to be out four to six weeks, Millwood said.

"Not having him all together is a big blow," Millwood said. "He's the only senior on our line and he is one of our leaders. We've got (other) kids jumping in, but you really can't replace (his talent)."

The injury occurred while Kia was pass-blocking. A defender fell on his leg.

"It was an accident," Millwood said.

Kia has received at least 10 Division I offers, including from Hawai'i, UCLA, Tennessee, Arizona, Oklahoma, Oregon State, UNLV, Utah and New Mexico State, Millwood said. Millwood said he spoke to some of the schools, which said their offers are good despite Saturday's injury.

"They said (the injury) is not going to affect him because the tibia is not a weight-bearing bone," Millwood said.

The defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association West champion Trojans, who finished second in the OIA last year, will play defending Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I champion King Kekaulike Saturday at Mililani. Game time is 7 p.m.

Other Hawai'i players listed in the SchoolSports magazine from Hawai'i are Konawaena tight end Dylan Rush (ranked 69th) and Radford defensive lineman Ramsey Feagai, who was listed among the "Next 100 Players to Watch" in the West region.

In another preseason honor, Radford defensive lineman Russell Wantowski is listed on Reebok's West region defense.
