Aloha Festivals, a community celebration that attracts both residents and visitors, is embracing a new theme and a cultural emphasis this year, with the honu, or sea turtle, as a central image.

"Na Honu Hawai'i — The Spirit Within" is this year's theme, to be used on the festivals' official ribbon and merchandise.

Blaine Kia, a cultural adviser to the festival, said that the honu artwork on Aloha Festivals keepsakes represents unity, strength and the endurance of tradition among the Hawaiian people.

"We expect that the new, culturally based approach, will now begin to infiltrate all aspects of the festival," said Kia, who also is an Aloha Festivals board member.

One of the first ribbons, boasting the slogan with the honu, was presented to Gov. Linda Lingle.

"The ribbon represents unity and is an appropriate gift for a leader who unifies all islands with a commitment to perpetuating the Hawaiian culture in mind," said Leolani Kim, president of Aloha Festivals.

According to the festival's Web site, www.alohafestivals.com, the honu symbolizes longevity, peace and spirit with the Hawaiians and is beloved around the world as a creature of peace, hope, humanity and love.

The festival is marking its 59th anniversary this year.

The $5 ribbons are available at community outlets in the weeks preceding the big events, which include ho'olaule'as Sept. 9 in Waikiki and Sept. 16 in downtown Honolulu, and a floral parade Sept. 17.
