Julian Ceno of Hawaiian Steam Inc. yesterday fought a brushfire in a former ammunition storage area called Kipapa Caves in Wahiawa. Ceno and a co-worker are there for demolition work, but for the past two days have been using their equipment to fight fire.

WAIKELE — Firefighters yesterday battled scattered brushfires in Kipapa Gulch for the second consecutive day, and a fire official said the latest fires may have been the work of firebugs.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said although flare-ups from Wednesday's fire are a possible cause, "we suspect a new portion of the fires was intentionally set" because yesterday's fires were in a different part of the gulch.

The latest fires were concentrated near the Royal Kunia Golf Course and burned 25 acres, raising the two-day total to about 250 acres, Tejada said. There were no reported injuries.

No houses were endangered, but wind carried smoke into the Royal Kunia neighborhood again.

Yesterday's fires were reported at about 10 a.m. As of 6:30 p.m., Tejada said it appeared all had been brought under control, but that fire crews would be standing by.

"It's just that when the wind picks up, we might get some additional hot spots that need to get put out," Tejada said.

The crews used access roads in a former Navy storage area to reach the fires, and the Fire Department's Air One helicopter and a military Chinook helicopter made frequent water drops.
