HILO, Hawai'i — A 54-year-old Kealakekua man died yesterday of injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash on Kuakini Highway near Keauhou.

Police said Michael D. Bovard was riding a 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle north on Kuakini at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday when he struck a vehicle in front of him that was making a right turn onto Walua Road. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he died at 8:50 a.m. the following morning. The driver of the other vehicle, a 42-year-old Pennsylvania man, was not injured.

There have been 23 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 28 a year ago.
