Hawai'i gas price hits record $2.833

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Hawai'i hit a record high $2.833 today, preserving the state's distinction of having the highest gas prices in the nation, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

California's gas prices were the second highest at $2.798 a gallon. The national average was $2.611 a gallon.

Hawai'i's record high was 9 cents higher than a week ago, 19 cents higher than a month ago and 48 cents higher than a year ago. Meanwhile, both Maui and Honolulu set record highs today. Maui's average was $3.022 and Honolulu was $2.746.



NRC sets Aug. 31 meeting on proposed irradiator

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a public meeting Aug. 31 in Honolulu to discuss a proposal by Pa'ina Hawaii LLC to build an irradiator near Honolulu International Airport to treat fresh fruit and vegetables for export to the Mainland.

The device is used to kill fruit flies and other insects on produce by exposing them to radiation.

NRC staff will be on hand to provide information on the process that will be used to review Pa'ina's application. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel. For more information, visit www.nrc.gov.
