State sets maximum wholesale gas price at $2.74

As Hawai'i prepares to implement the nation's only government-imposed limits on gasoline prices next week, the Public Utilities Commission today issued its list of mandated wholesale gasoline prices.

As of Sept. 1 the maximum pre-tax price wholesalers can charge for regular in Honolulu is about $2.16 a gallon.

That equates to $2.74 a gallon when taxes are added.

The wholesale cap — which excludes any retail mark-up — is slightly less than the average retail price today of nearly $2.76 a gallon for regular gasoline in Honolulu, according the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

Assuming wholesalers charge the maximum allowed by the cap and retailers add an estimated 12 cent markup, the price consumers pay at the pump will likely be higher under the gas cap.
