One man was in serious condition after he was shot last night in Wahiawa.

Police arrested another man on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. He was being held last night pending charges.

The shooting occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on Ohai Street near California Avenue. Police had been called to the area to break up fights when officers heard gunshots in a nearby alley, police said.

Officers found a man with gunshot wounds and were told by witnesses that a man in a car had fired the shots and fled. The vehicle with two men in it was spotted near Foote Gate at Schofield Barracks, but police said they were unable to stop the vehicle.

A short while later, the car returned with one man in it. Police said the man told officers that he was unable to stop earlier because he was being held at gunpoint.

But police arrested the driver and booked him for investigation of attempted murder.

The wounded man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center where he was in serious condition last night.

GUNSHOT VICTIM'S FAMILY FILES SUIT

The family of a 28-year-old Kane'ohe man who was shot to death two years ago has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the man who was convicted of the murder.

Gregory R. Awana, a former investigator with the city medical examiner's office, is serving a life term in prison with the possibility of parole after he was found guilty of murdering Yorck K. Woita on Aug. 29, 2003. Awana was convicted in December 2004 of shooting Woita in the head three times in Awana's Manoa home after an argument over marijuana profits.

After killing Woita, prosecutors said, Awana dumped Woita's body in Kane'ohe Bay. The body has not been found.

Awana must serve 15 years before the Hawai'i Paroling Authority can determine when he will be eligible for parole.

Yesterday, Woita's family members alleged in their lawsuit that Awana "intentionally and maliciously" caused the death of Woita. The lawsuit was filed by attorney Gary Levitt on behalf of Beverly Lum, Woita's mother; Tracy Woita, Yorck Woita's sister; and Yorck K. Woita, the dead man's father.

MOKULE'IA

CAR STOLEN FROM NAKED CAMPER

Police yesterday continued to look for a 28-year-old man suspected of stealing a car Monday morning from a naked woman at Mokule'ia Beach.

The woman told police she was in her tent about 8 a.m. when she heard the car's engine start.

The woman ran out of the tent in the nude and jumped on the hood of the car to try to keep it from being stolen, police said.

They said the car swerved back and forth and made a series of sharp U-turns in hopes of dislodging the woman, who fell off the car near Camp Erdman on Farrington Highway.

A witness followed the stolen car in his own car until the suspect used the stolen car to ram the witness's car before fleeing, police said.
