Tube Notes

In the romantic comedy "Sweet Home Alabama," Reese Witherspoon plays a New York fashion designer who returns to her home town to get her estranged husband to sign the divorce papers.

TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. Red Buttons is one of the eternal forces of show business. Tonight's rerun has Buttons, 86, playing the same character he did on "ER" a decade ago. He's the patient now, still blaming Dr. Carter for killing his wife. That episode drew him an Emmy nomination as best guest actor in a drama. Buttons his own high-rated "The Red Buttons Show" on TV back in 1952-53 and in 1957 won an Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara." Before that he was on the burlesque circuit and played the infamous Minsky's nightclub in New York City. "I was actually on stage when Minsky's was raided in 1942," he recalled.

"Sweet Home Alabama" (2002), 7 p.m., Fox. Reese Witherspoon scored at the box office with this romantic comedy. She plays a New York fashion designer who returns home to get her long-estranged husband to sign the divorce papers.

"Evolution" (2001), 7 p.m., ABC. Director Ivan Reitman, who triumphed in 1984 with "Ghostbusters," tried a similar theme here with less success. David Duchovny and Orlando Jones play Arizona science teachers who investigate a meteor-landing site and find fast-evolving aliens.

"Big Brother," 7 p.m., CBS. A seventh person is eliminated, trimming the field to seven.

"Will & Grace," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Alan Arkin guests as Grace's playful dad. Karen is attracted to the guy's golf buddy, played by Lee Majors.

"Scrubs," 8 and 8:30 p.m., NBC. The first rerun has John Bennett Perry and Matthew Perry play father and son, which they are in real life; the dad needs a kidney transplant. The second has Elliot making J.D. jealous of her skill with patients and getting the janitor upset during a date.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. A corpse is found in a storm-drain tunnel.

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. This time, things are personal. Danny's brother is missing; Danny feels he might have had financial trouble.
