Waiakea High school freshman Kimberly Kim, who turned 14 Tuesday, finished third at the Ping Phoenix Junior last weekend. The American Junior Golf Association event was at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course.

Kim closed with a 2-under-par 69 for a three-day total of 3-under 210. The winner was Taylore Karle, from nearby Scottsdale, who shot 70-205.

Makawao's Thomas Robertson (80-227) tied for 55th in the boys division. Tim McKenney, from Scottsdale, won at 67-200.

Kim is a captain's pick by LPGA player Colleen Walker for the U.S. Ping Junior Solheim Cup. Patterned after The Solheim Cup, the team event features the top 12 girls from the United States against those from Europe. The biennial event will be at The Bridgewater Club in Westfield, Ind., Sept. 5 to 7.

Kim is ranked 12th based on points. She won her first AJGA event last year at the I.R.I. Golf Group Sun Willows Junior (Pasco, Wash.).

Kim set the record for the youngest player to win an AJGA Open event in the association's history. The honorable mention Rolex Junior All-American tied for fourth at this year's Ping Junior at The Woodlands and third at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship.

Kim's Solheim teammate will be Morgan Pressel, who is putting off turning pro to play.
