No. 8 HPU goes 6-0 in volleyball

Danie Hout had 11 kills as eighth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific defeated Alaska-Anchorage, 30-16, 30-12, 30-19, yesterday to finish unbeaten in the 17th Hawaiian Style Classic at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo gymnasium.

Flavia Brakling added seven kills and 12 digs for HPU, which won all six of its matches in the three-day tournament. Setter Vera Oliveira was named the classic's MVP.

Earlier yesterday, HPU swept Seattle, 30-14, 30-18, 30-24.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i also finished unbeaten, winning two matches yesterday to close with a 5-0 record.

Yu Chuan Weng had 27 kills and Lilly Tufuga 25 as the Seasiders outlasted Central Washington, 30-21, 30-32, 21-30, 30-23, 16-14. Weng then had 19 kills and Tufuga 12, lifting BYUH to a 30-22, 30-25, 30-16 victory over Northern State of Aberdeen, S.D.

Chaminade lost its final match yesterday to finish the tournament with a 5-1 record. Central Washington held off the 20th-ranked Silverswords, 27-30, 30-26, 30-17, 35-37, 19-17, behind 22 kills apiece from LeAnne McGahue and Crystal Ames. Marijana Stanic had 24 kills and 26 digs for Chaminade.

Earlier in the day, Chaminade beat Northern State, 30-24, 30-25, 30-23.

Host Hawai'i-Hilo finished 3-3 after splitting two matches yesterday. Taina Savage had 21 kills in UHH's 30-27, 30-28, 30-21 victory over Alaska-Anchorage, and added 19 kills in a 20-30, 30-22, 30-23, 30-28 loss to Seattle.

CLASSIC TICKETS ON SALE

Tickets for the 2005 HHSAA Foundation Football Classic, featuring Saint Louis and Punahou against teams from Utah, go on sale tomorrow. The doubleheader will be played Sept. 10 at Aloha Stadium.

Presale tickets — $12 for adults, $6 for students kindergarten through 12th grade — will be available at the Aloha Stadium box office and the stadium's charge-by-phone line (484-1122), and University of Hawai'i ticket outlets through Sept. 9. Prices rise to $17 and $9 on game day.

The UH outlets include the Stan Sheriff Center, Campus Center, Rainbowtique-Ward and Windward Community College OCET office.

Saint Louis will play Utah's 5A champion Davis at 5 p.m., and Punahou meets 4A champion Timpview at 8.

CLINIC FOR COACHES

The Hawai'i Basketball Coaches' Clinic — with the theme of "Basketball from Far and Wide Comes to O'ahu" — features current and former Hawai'i coaches.

The clinic is Oct. 8, at the Damien Memorial High School gymnasium, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Last year's clinic was attended by more than 135 coaches from around the state.

The staff features Larry Doty from Linfield College in Oregon, Hawai'i Pacific's Kelly Wells, Chaminade's Matt Mahar, former Hawai'i-Hilo coach Jimmy Yagi, and Alan Lum, certified Positive Coaching Alliance clinician from Punahou.

BYU BLANKS FOE

Brigham Young beat George Mason, 4-0, yesterday in the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Hawai'i plays BYU tomorrow at 5.
