TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"American Masters: F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams," 9 p.m., PBS. When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote of the Jazz Age he seemed to fit New York society perfectly. He was a Princeton grad, handsome and well-spoken with a beautiful and high-spirited wife. Still, he felt inauthentic. He was from St. Paul, Minn., where his family's finances declined after his father lost his job. He had never mixed well with the old-money East of the Ivy League. His life soon declined. He drank heavily and fought with his wife, Zelda, who had nervous breakdowns and was institutionalized. "I am a forgotten man," he wrote in 1940, the year he would die of a heart attack at 44. Instead, he would be remembered for generations. In 1940, the Modern Library had dropped his "Great Gatsby" because of weak sales. In 1998, that group's board called it the second-best novel of the 20th century, trailing only James Joyce's "Ulysses." In 2000 alone, it sold 300,000 copies. This 2001 documentary offers a rich and elegant portrait, ranging from interviews to excerpts read by Amy Irving, Campbell Scott and Laura Linney.

OF NOTE

"Meet Mister Mom," 7 p.m., NBC. This reality show has moved from Tuesdays. Tonight, it pits two New Jersey dads; one has all boys, the other has all girls.

"So You Think You Can Dance," 7 p.m., Fox. Tonight's episode runs 90 minutes, barring another last-minute expansion. There will be 12 dancers competing.

"The George Lopez Show," 7 and 7:30 p.m., ABC. In the first rerun, George's daughter enters a poetry slam; Hilary Duff guests as a feminist poet. In the second, his wife has lunch with an ex-boyfriend who is now a TV anchor. Naturally, George suspects an affair.

"Over There," 7 p.m., FX. Last week, the soldiers raged at a TV newsman (played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar of "NYPD Blue") whose report was edited to paint a damning picture of the shooting of a mother and her son. He then confronted rebels who took him hostage. Tonight, Sgt. Scream's team tries to rescue him.

"Lost," 8 and 9 p.m., ABC. In the first rerun, Hurley is obsessed with finding the French woman, and when he wanders into the jungle, three men go after him. In the second, Locke has physical problems when he tries to open the hatch.

"Law & Order," 8 and 9 p.m., NBC. In the first rerun, a rich man has been killed; police suspect his beautiful young wife ( Andrea Roth, who is terrific as Janet in "Rescue Me") or her lover. In the second, a convicted child-molester is killed shortly after getting out of prison; police aren't eager to find the killer.
