Alika Smith named UH assistant

Former University of Hawaii and Kalaheo High standout player Alika Smith has been selected as an assistant basketball coach for the Rainbow Warriors.

Smith will be formally introduced as the latest addition to Riley Wallace's coaching staff Thursday afternoon.

Smith was an all-state performer at Kalaheo, and then played for Wallace at UH from 1994-98. He paired with Anthony Carter to form the "Dynamic Duo" on Hawaii's NIT teams of 1997 and 1998.

Smith ranks third in UH men's basketball history with 1,415 points. He was a second team All-Western Athletic Conference selection as a junior and senior.

After playing at UH, Smith had stints as an assistant coach at Hawaii-Hilo and Kalaheo.

Smith replaces Bob Burke, who left UH in September to become an assistant coach with the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers.

Wallace's first choice for the assistant coach position was his brother, Loren Wallace, but that idea was rejected by UH athletic director Herman Frazier.
