Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin shot a 3-under 69 at Panther Lakes Course and is tied for 52nd place after four rounds of the PGA Q-School at Winter Garden, Fla.

McLachlin, a Punahou School graduate, is at 5-under 283 with two rounds to play in the 108-hole tournament. The top 30 and ties after tomorrow's final round earn full-exempt status on the PGA Tour for next year.

Kamehameha Schools alum Keoke Cotner shot 73 at the Crooked Cat Course and is tied for 110th at 289.

Third-round leader Michael Allen started to feel the pressure, but responded with three straight birdies to close out a round of 3-under 69 at Panther Lakes to gain a share of the lead with D.A. Points (66 at Panther Lakes) at 16-under 272.

There are 31 players with scores of 280 or better.

BASKETBALL

HAWAI'I-HILO LOSES

St. Edward's University overcame a 30-point performance by Justin Griffin and an eight-point deficit in the final 5 1/2 minutes to defeat turnover-prone Hawai'i-Hilo, 87-80, yesterday in a non-conference game at Austin, Texas.

Daniel Pierre scored 23 points and Shawn Weinstein added 19 for St. Edward's (4-2), but it was the late scoring punch of Chavon Farmer and poor ball-handling by Hilo that spurred the comeback. The Vulcans had nine of their 29 turnovers in the final 5:17.

Farmer, who scored 10 points, hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 74 with 3:53 to play, then sank another 3-pointer with 1:11 left to put St. Edward's ahead to stay at 79-76. He later added two free throws, making it 82-76 with 45 seconds left.

Griffin hit 10 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 5 3-pointers, and 6 of 6 free-throw attempts for the Vulcans (4-3). Justin Dobson added 20 points, and Alex Graham contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds for Hilo.

CHAMINADE WINS

Chris Reaves scored 19 points as Chaminade defeated Western Oregon, 85-73, yesterday in a non-conference game at Monmouth, Ore.

Zach Whiting added 15 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Chaminade (2-4), with Dylan McCune adding 15 points and Stewart Kussler 10.

Travis Kuhns led Western Oregon (3-3) with 22 points.

ARENA FOOTBALL

BLAZE SIGN GESSER

Quarterback Jason Gesser, a former Saint Louis School and Washington State standout, has signed a one-year contract with the Arena Football League's Utah Blaze.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed due to team policy.

"Jason is a strong, intelligent quarterback," said Blaze head coach and general manager Danny White.

Gesser, who is entering his rookie AFL season, spent time with the NFL's Tennessee Titans and CFL's Calgary Stampeders the last two seasons.
