The University of Central Florida football team didn't get a piece of the University of Hawai'i's NCAA turnaround records, but the Golden Knights will wind up with a berth in the Warriors' bowl game as a consolation prize.

UCF, which had the biggest turnaround season in the nation this year going from 0-11 to 8-4, will receive an invitation today to play in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. The Golden Knights could meet Western Athletic Conference co-champion Nevada (8-3) on Christmas Eve at Aloha Stadium.

UCF, which won Conference USA's East Division, fell to Tulsa yesterday, 44-27, in C-USA's inaugural title game.

Had UCF beaten Tulsa, the Golden Knights would have tied UH's NCAA Division I-A records for the most improved won-lost record (8.5 games) as well as the most improved won-lost record after a winless season (8.5). Had UCF beaten Tulsa and won its bowl game, it would have broken both records.

UH set the records in 1999 going 9-4 from an 0-12 finish in 1998.

Meanwhile, the WAC's bowl selection/placement committee meets today to determine its representative to the Hawai'i Bowl. Conference officials said Nevada, which shared the WAC title with Boise State, would be the designated team unless Oregon gets a Bowl Championship Series berth.

If Oregon goes to the Feista Bowl, the Pac-10 would not be able to fill its spot in the Las Vegas Bowl, where Nevada would play Brigham Young. In that case, Louisiana Tech (7-4) would be Hawai'i-bound after its upset of Fresno State. Georgia to Sugar Bowl; FSU in Orange Bowl

In addition to Southern California and Texas wrapping up a date in the Rose Bowl, several other teams earned automatic bowl berths yesterday.

Georgia (10-2) grabbed one when the Bulldogs beat LSU (10-2) 34-14 in the Southeastern Conference title game. The victory sends the Dawgs back to the Georgia Dome in about a month to play in the Sugar Bowl, which was forced out of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

Florida State (8-4) snapped a three-game losing streak and beat Virginia Tech (10-2), 27-22, in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game. Florida State will play in the Orange Bowl, perhaps against Penn State.

West Virginia (10-1) had already earned the Big East's BCS bid before a 28-13 win at South Florida.

The Fiesta, Orange and Sugar bowl pairings will be announced today.
