POLICE BEAT
Suspects arrested in car break-in

Advertiser Staff

Two Hale'iwa men were arrested yesterday as suspects in a car break-in at Chun's Reef.

A 63-year-old woman reported seeing one of the men enter her and her husband's car about 4:30 p.m. and remove her purse. She told police the man ran a short distance to another car, driven by a second man, and the pair took off.

Police issued an all-points bulletin, and the two men, both 18, were stopped near Marconi Road and Kamehameha Highway in Kahuku and arrested for suspicion of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.

Driver allegedly tries to run over jogger

A 26-year-old Kapahulu man was arrested over the weekend in connection with an incident last month in which a jogger reported being nearly run over twice in the Kahala area.

The jogger told police he was running in the bicycle lane near Kealaolu Avenue and Moho Street about 10:30 a.m. Nov. 6 when the driver of a car intentionally tried to run him over two times.

The jogger told police he believe the incident apparently stemmed from an earlier traffic altercation with the same driver.

The suspect, who was accompanied by his attorney, turned himself in at police headquarters and was arrested for suspicion of attempted second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.

Suspicious license plates on old car lead to arrest

A 21-year-old Makaha man was arrested yesterday morning after police spotted him driving an older model car with paper license plates.

Police said they recognized the man as someone who has a history of operating stolen vehicles. When police began to tail the suspected stolen car, the driver stopped, jumped out and ran.

Police officers checking the area found the man walking close to where the car had been abandoned. After checking the car's vehicle identification number and determining it had been stolen from a 39-year-old man, the suspect was arrested for suspicion of unlawful control of a propelled vehicle and two unrelated warrants.
