Kayaker missing after capsizing

Advertiser Staff

Police and fire rescue specialists planned to resume searching the waters off Kailua Beach Park this morning for a missing 49-year-old California man who was on a rented tandem kayak that capsized yesterday after being struck by a wave.

Fire Department spokesman Capt. Emmit Kane said the man, an Air Force reservist in Hawai'i for a training session, and a 26-year-old woman also from California and from the same unit rented a tandem kayak yesterday morning and were escorted out to the Mokulua islets by a guide in a second kayak. The tandem kayak was hit by a wave and capsized on the way back, said Kane.

Neither of the two was wearing a life jacket. The woman swam safely to the guide's kayak.

An off-shore search began at about 2 p.m. Officials also conducted a shoreline search. The search was suspended at 6:30 p.m.

HONOLULU

COMMISSIONER QUITS LIQUOR PANEL

Honolulu City Liquor Commissioner Danny Auyoung yesterday announced he has resigned that post to seek to become the agency's top administrator.

Auyoung notified Commission Chairman Dennis Enomoto of his decision last week but made his resignation effective Nov. 3, the last time he participated in agency decision-making. Enomoto said the commission respects Auyoung's commitment to the agency.

The last liquor control administrator, Wallace Weatherwax, resigned effective Oct. 31. The agency has been accused of lax management and rocked by corruption when eight former investigators were convicted of racketeering, bribery and extortion for accepting bribes from owners and workers of hostess bars and strip clubs in 2000 and 2001.

Enomoto said he expects interviews for the administrator position to begin in January.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann appointed Auyoung in April. His term would have expired in December 2006.
